James LeRoy Strebig, of Appleton, passed away on Sept. 25, 2015. He was born to LeRoy and Florence Strebig on Oct. 25, 1948, in Medford. He graduated from Shawano Senior High School in 1967.
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1968-1972, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer. He graduated from the Navy Clerical School in Bainbridge, Maryland, and was transferred to the Canal Zone, Panama, where he worked for the U.S. Southern Command Headquarters. Jim was honorably discharged in 1972. While in the Canal Zone, he met and married his wife, Luisa Gonzalez, on Dec. 15, 1970. Following his discharge, Jim continued serving in the United States Navy Reserves until 1974.
Following his discharge, Jim worked as a draftsman for Giddings and Lewis in Kaukauna for two years. He then worked for Voith Paper Inc., Appleton, for the next 28 years, until his heart attack in October 2003. Jim worked himself up to a project engineer, and finally worked for the corporate service headquarters as the North American product manager for headbox services. He retired in 2004.
Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was a league bowler. He was also very fond of golfing and, in the later years, bingo with his wife, Lisa. He adored his computer and continued to send e-mails to his past friends and co-workers around the world on a daily basis.
Jim further enjoyed giving to the less fortunate, especially at Christmas time. He rang the bell for the Salvation Army for years.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa; daughters, Kristin Chaulklin and her son, Jacob, and Jennifer Meador (Oscar); brothers, Roger Strebig (Pat) and Mark Hull (Sarah); sisters, Cheryl Beyer (Jack), Dawn Anderson (Neil), Debra Steinke (Mike), and Renee Hull; and stepfather, Ed Hull (Marion).
He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Hull, and his father, LeRoy Strebig, and his grandparents.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, from 12-1 p.m., at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St., Appleton. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., with Pastor Mike Huff officiating.
