Wisconsin had 3.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 5, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Moisture limited planting and tillage, especially in the northern two-thirds of the state. The rain was beneficial for small grains and grasses. Field activities included tillage, planting and fertilizer application as conditions allowed.
Topsoil moisture condition rated zero percent very short, 10% short, 71% adequate and 19% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated zero percent very short, 13% short, 75% adequate and 12% surplus.
Corn planting was 22 percent complete, five days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the five-year average. Some emergence was observed southern Wisconsin.
Soybean planting was 22% complete, eight days ahead of last year and five days ahead of average.
Oat planting progress was 54% complete, nine days ahead of last year and four days ahead of average. Emergence was 25% complete.
Seventy-seven percent of potato acreage has been planted, 14 days ahead of last year and 12 days ahead of average.
Spring tillage was 60% complete, nine days ahead of last year and six days ahead of average.
Winter wheat condition was rated 86% good to excellent statewide, up 4% from last week.
The first all hay condition of the year rated good to excellent statewide at 74%.
Pasture and range condition was rated 55% good to excellent statewide, up 9% from last week.
