Utility commissioner selected

The Oconto Falls City Council on Sept. 8 appointed Christos Anastasopoulos as the new utility commissioner for the city. Anastasopoulos will serve the four years remaining of the five-year term vacated by Paul Mogged, who resigned Aug. 17 because he is moving out of the city. Three applicants, Anastasopoulos, Loretta Shellman and Bart Schindel, sent letters of interest to the city. Anastasopoulos spoke to the council, saying, “I’ve lived here most of my life, and I’m looking to get more involved with the city to help make the city be a better place.” During discussion, Alderman Mat McDermid said he was in favor of appointing Anastasopoulos, 30. “It would be nice to see younger people get involved,” he said. Alderman Marty Coopman spoke to the qualities of the other applicants, saying, “Bart’s been around the block.” He complimented Shellman’s past service on the commission, saying. “Loretta did a great job,” he said. Alderman Don Osborne noted Schindel’s “30-plus” years on the city fire department and his years working for the school district. With the absence of Alderman Kevin Rusch, Anastasopoulos won with three votes. Schindel received two.
