Samantha Routheau, tourism director for the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation of the Oconto Region (TEDCOR), is the the 2024 recipient of the Harold P. Heckendorf Community Service Award presented by NEW Credit Union.
TEDCOR is the new name of the former Oconto County Economic Development Corp.
Routheau accepted the award from NEW Credit Union’s President Lisa Gilligan at the financial institution’s 62nd annual membership meeting. She also received a $250 check, and the charity of her choice, the Winter Wonderland in Oconto, will also receive a check of $250.
As Oconto County’s tourism director, Samantha Routheau promotes the beauty, recreational opportunities, and commercial possibilities of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. She has worked in the tourism and hospitality sector for over 10 years.
“Equipped with comprehensive knowledge of the region and well-developed communication skills, Samantha is a strong voice for Oconto County and an effective leader in Wisconsin’s tourism industry,” according to a statement the credit union published in its announcement of the award. “Her creative ideas and ability to think outside-the-box contribute to the growth of tourism and business development in the Oconto area.”
Routheau also is a devoted volunteer who actively participates in a variety of events and activities, including Winter Wonderland, Harvest Fest, Main Street Trick or Treat, Santa’s Visit, and more.
She currently serves on the Oconto Unified School Board, Bellin’s Northern Advisory Board, Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Board, North Central Wisconsin Marketing Board, Wisconsin Harbor Towns Committee, Bellin Young Professionals, and as president of the Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce.
Routheau grew up in the in the Town of Pensaukee — her parents are Clark and Julie Routheau — went to school in the Oconto Unified School District and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She and her son, Bodhi, 4, currently live near Oconto.
She said she hopes to continue working to create a welcoming environment for families to enjoy the area.
“I am constantly brainstorming new ideas and projects to engage the community. Staying idle is not my style,” Routheau said.
The award named for Heckendorf, a longtime member of the credit union’s board of directors, is open to anyone who has displayed exemplary community service and volunteerism.
