Choir members from five churches will combine their voices in a community Hymn Sing at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano.
“We hope many people from around the area are able to attend Hymn Sing and enjoy singing with us to praise God,” said Susan Kurek, director of music at Sacred Heart.
Other churches participating are First Presbyterian, Hope Community, Peace United Church of Christ and St. John’s Episcopal.
The Rev. Luke Ferris of Sacred Heart said he received an email last spring from Bruce Westerveld, a member of First Presbyterian, who wanted to know if anyone would be interested in an old-fashioned hymn sing, something he had been involved in during an out-of-town Bible study this summer.
When the Sacred Heart choir members said they would like to participate, Kurek took over from there.
The key planners included Kurek, Bruce and Jane Westerveld, Linda Myers, Pastor Susan Phillips, Gloria Grys, Jared Edwards and Darla Van Camp.
“We started meeting at the beginning of summer and it has been a wonderful experience,” Kurek said.
Members from other church choirs will become one community choir and will be accompanied by musicians from the area.
“Through word of mouth, choir members from other churches are also participating,” Kurek said.
There will be about 16 songs. The program is expected to last just over an hour. Fellowship and hospitality will follow.
“We thought is would be a great idea to support a local charity as well, so we are asking for a free-will offering, which will be given entirely to SAM 25,” Kurek said.
SAM 25 is a local nonprofit group working to combat homelessness and poverty.
