Shawano/Bonduel extended its winning streak to two with a 9-4 win over Chequamegon/Phillips/Butternut on Dec. 16 in Park Falls.
Chequamegon took an early 2-0 lead in the first period before Cam Schroeder put Shawano on the board at 5:41 to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team going into the second period.
Chequamegon scored at 0:40 to go up 3-1.
That’s when Shawano lit up the board. The Hawks scored four times in the second period.
Karson Stoss scored at 7:45 with a Jeremy Helmuth assist. At 8:10, it was Schroeder again with help from Gavin Hundt. Brycen Madison scored at 16:07 with Stoss assisting, and Stoss then scored at 16:50 with help from Hundt and Michale Dillenberg.
The third period was a replica of the second. Chequamegon scored first at 2:40, and Shawano responded with four more goals.
Josh Fisken scored at 3:39. Hunter Jones, with an assist from Dillenberg, scored at 6:20. Hundt scored at 12:03 with help from Madison, and Waylon Snider scored at 15:44, again with help from Madison.
Each team served eight minutes in the penalty box on four infractions.
Shawano skaters had 41 shots on goal.
In the net for the Hawks, Kaiden Thornborrow made 11 saves on 13 shots on goal, and Tyson Lyons had 10 saves on 12 shots on goal. Each gave up two goals.
First win of the season
A 6-2 win over over Manitowoc JV marked the first victory of the year for the Shawano/Bonduel boys hockey team.
Gavin Hundt recorded a hat trick in the Dec. 14 home game, with Hunter Jones, Josh Fisken and Cam Schroeder each scoring a goal as well.
“Very proud of our energy this evening,” Hawks coach Adam Gafner said. “As coaches, we’ve been preaching to our team to play with a greater sense of urgency. It was nice to see the team respond.”
Goals were traded evenly in the first period, with Hundt scoring first with an assist from Karson Stoss to put the hosts up 1-0. Then, tied at 1-1, Bundt scored at the 10:34 mark only to have Manitowoc score again to even the score at 2-2 as the period ended.
Shawano/Bonduel took control of the game with three unanswered goals in the second period. Hundt recorded his hat trick at 7:07 with help from Stoss and Schroeder. Jones scored at 9:51 with assists from Jeremy Helmuth and Brycen Madison. Finally, Fisken scored at 11:49 to give Shawano/Bonduel at 5-2 lead.
At 3:57 in the third period, Schroeder scored with an assist by Stoss.
“It was great to see all three lines scoring tonight,” Gafner said. “We haven’t had that yet all season.”
Shawano/Bonduel was penalized 23 minutes on 10 infractions, while Manitowoc JV was called on two fouls and served four minutes.
Kaiden Thornborrow worked the net for the Hawk and collected 20 saves on 22 shots on goal. Shawano/Bonduel had 38 shots on goal against Manitowoc JV’s Dan Darlin.
