The Shawano/Bonduel/Clintonville co-op boys hockey team opened the 2023-24 season Nov. 21 at Rhinelander, and despite hanging tough much of the game, the team lost 5-1 at Rhinelander.
“The score was 0-0 after the first period, 2-1 Rhinelander after the second period,” Hawks coach Adam Gafner said. “We were right in the game all way, just didn’t get it done in the third.”
Trailing 2-0, Shawano’s only goal came at 11:32 in the second period with a score by Gavin Hundt, with an assist by Karson Stoss.
“I really thought Tyson Lyons, our freshman goalie making his first career start, kept us in the game to give us a chance in the third,” Gafner said. “The big difference in the game scorewise resulted from special teams. Rhinelander was 2-8 on the power play and we were 0-6. It’s an area we have and will continue to work on. We need need to be better in that area as a group.”
Shawano had 20 shots on goal, while Rhinelander had 28.
Members of the Hawks spent 16 minutes in the penalty box on eight infractions, while the Hodags were penalized seven times from 14 minutes.
Shawano is scheduled to play Waupaca on Nov. 28.
