The city of Shawano will celebrate Arbor Day on May 1 at 10 a.m. at Franklin Park, 235 S. Washington St., Shawano.
Members of the Shawano Tree Advisory Committee and city officials will recognize Friend of Nature Award winners Ken and Marilyn Kroenke, 127 Gannon Court, and the Shawano Park and Recreation Department as this year’s award recipients.
The Friend of Nature Awards are given annually to individuals and businesses that have shown leadership and commitment to improving their properties by planting and protecting trees and landscape plants. The plantings on these properties enhance the natural qualities of the properties for improved natural beauty, as well as provide shade, aesthetics, bird habitat, improved air quality and improved stormwater runoff retention.
In recognition of this award, each property will have a Nature’s Friend sign posted on their yard for public viewing and a tree planted in their honor, provided by the city’s public works department.
Fourth and fifth grade students from Olga Brener Intermediate School, St. James Lutheran School and Sacred Heart Catholic School will attend the celebration and assist with the planting of a tree in memory of Bill Erdman, past tree advisory committee chairman.
The city is celebrating 30 years as a Tree City USA national member and its 12th year of receiving the Growth Award. The city is also celebrating its 21st year as a Tree Line USA Award recipient with support of the Shawano Municipal Utilities. Scott Lyon, regional representative with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, will present the awards to the city.
