Tournament powerhouse Shawano made a statement Friday at the Shawano Youth League 9U baseball tournament at Memorial Field.
The team, which outscored its opponents 52-3 in four games to win a recent tourney in Stevens Point, defeated Rapids Rage 10-0 in five innings.
In other action, the Shawano Black 10U squad ended its game against Central Wisconsin tied 2-2. Shawano has won tournaments in Oconto and Stevens Point this season.
Shawano Black and Shawano Red, which lost 5-2 to Peshtigo on Friday, are competing in a 12-team tourney.
Red coach Steve Reed said his team needs to focus on fundamentals.
“Win or lose, as long as we play hard and have fundamentally sound baseball, that is what I am looking for,” Reed said.
The squad is competing in its second tournament since the SYL expanded the 10U program.
“This team was started by the youth league tournament this year to get more kids more playing time,” Reed said.
Bob Hannes, SYL board member, said the final weekend SYL tourneys this season is off to a good start.
“It will be a good weekend of great baseball,” Hannes said. “People should expect great baseball, and there are a lot of teams that have come from a long way away.”
Opening pitch is at 8 a.m. Saturday. The tournaments conclude Sunday afternoon.
