The Gillett and Suring school districts will receive more money in transportation aid, thanks to the Department of Public Instruction’s efforts to help districts with above-average student transportation costs.
According to a press release from the DPI, $5 million will be distributed to 128 districts that qualify for the first year of the high cost transportation categorical aid. Districts with transportation costs exceeding 150 percent of the statewide average cost per member are eligible for the aid.
The Gillett School District received $51,300.96, and Suring was awarded $61,948.
Gillett Superintendent Todd Carlson said the funding will free up money for other projects.
“Other moneys we had applied to transportation can now be used in other ways,” he said.
State law requires school districts to provide transportation for public and private school students if the student lives more than two miles from the nearest school they are entitled to attend.
Districts with large transportation costs are struggling due to rising expenses but no equivalent funding aid, according to the press release.
