Retiring Old Glory

Shawano American Legion Post 117 retired 1,742 worn and tattered U.S. flags Sunday in observance of Flag Day. With about two dozen people on hand, the Sons of the American Legion conducted the annual ceremonial burning. “All of these American flags have been inspected and have been found unserviceable,” said Pete Krolow, a Sons of the American Legion member. “Let these faded American flags of our country be retired and destroyed with respectful and honorable rites and their places be taken by bright new American flags of the same size and kind.” Local Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts assisted with the ceremony.
