The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Shawano-Menominee will hold a kickoff for the annual event from 6-7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Shawano Four Seasons Resort, 201 Airport Road.
The society is inviting people who are interested in learning more and getting involved in the event to attend.
The kickoff program will honor cancer survivors and caregivers. Attendees can register teams for the 2016 Relay for Life, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 2 at Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B.
At the Relay for Life, teams and individuals walk around a track and raise funds to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives and finish the fight against cancer. Each team tries to have at least one participant on the track at all times.
Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide in 2015. Last year, over 300 people participated in the Shawano-Menominee relay and raised over $50,000.
“Relay for Life is all about our community uniting with the American Cancer Society and supporting its efforts to finish the fight,” said Jenny Mailahn, co-chair of the event leadership team. “Volunteers and participants who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event are making a commitment to let Shawano and Menominee community members know that cancer can be defeated.”
