After five years of preparation, James Lonick was ordained a deacon Saturday by Bishop David Ricken of the Green Bay Diocese at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay.
“It’s been a long journey, but now it’s a new start,” Lonick said.
He preached the homily at all the weekend Masses at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, saying he was a little nervous but not afraid.
“They prepared us well,” he said.
Lonick gave major props to his family, especially his wife, Debbie, along with the congregation.
“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Deb,” he said. “I am so thankful for the support of the parish and my family.”
Lonick can now perform baptisms, and preside at weddings and funerals that are not Masses. He will preach a homily once a month, and he can prepare adults for baptism and marriage.
“My life will be more significantly impacted,” he said. “It’s overwhelming and humbling.”
