Battery of a peace officer
A Hartford man accused of trying to shoplift at Walmart in Shawano is facing a felony count of battery to a peace officer for allegedly grabbing an officer’s genitals during his arrest.
Ping Chen, 21, was detained by Walmart personnel July 1 after he allegedly tried to steal anti-virus software by taping it to the bottom of a shopping cart.
When police arrived, he allegedly refused to show an ID and resisted officers. The complaint alleges Chen grabbed one of the officer’s genitals during the struggle.
Chen could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine if found guilty. He is also charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and resisting an officer.
Chen is free on a $2,500 cash bond and is due in court for an adjourned initial appearance Monday.
Strangulation and suffocation
A Shawano man is facing a felony count of strangulation and suffocation in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident in the city last week.
Charles L. Gordon, 33, is accused of choking a woman during a domestic altercation July 2. He could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine if found guilty.
Gordon is also charged with misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse-related battery and disorderly conduct.
Gordon was being held on a $1,500 cash bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Friday.
Felony theft
A Wittenberg man has been charged with a count of felony theft after allegedly being caught in the act of stealing an all-terrain vehicle.
Kurt R. Wolff, 35, could face a maximum 3 1/2 years in prison and $10,000 fine if convicted. He also faces a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer.
According to the criminal complaint, a sheriff’s deputy came across Wolff’s van parked alongside Hemlock Road in the town of Wittenberg on May 17. The complaint alleges Wolff ran off into the woods when the deputy approached.
Behind Wolff’s van was a trailer that had a green Polaris all-terrain vehicle partially loaded, according to the complaint. The deputy checked with the occupants of the cabin where Wolff’s van was parked and discovered that their ATV was missing.
Wolff is scheduled for an initial court appearance on the charges July 22.
Attempted burglary
A Keshena man is facing a felony count of attempted burglary for allegedly trying to break into a Wescott tavern in December.
Justin M. Wilbur, 23, could face a maximum six years and three months in prison and a $12,500 fine if found guilty. He is also charged with a misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.
According to the criminal complaint, the front door of the business was broken, but a dead bolt prevented entry into the building. The noise attracted the attention of a witness who saw someone running from the scene, the complaint states.
Authorities found blood at the scene apparently from a cut sustained from broken glass. Wilbur was eventually tied to the attempted break-in through DNA, according to the complaint.
Wilbur is scheduled for an initial court appearance July 22.
