The Shawano American Legion baseball team has fallen behind early in games recently, but the team is battling back, as it did in a 14-6 win over Menominee on Friday night at Memorial Park.
Shawano (3-9) fell behind Menominee (4-5) 5-1 after the first 1 1/2 innings.
After scoring runs in the second and fourth to cut Menominee’s lead to 5-3, Taylor Prey hit a two-run double to tie the game. Reece Wilke then hit a triple to score Prey and give Shawano the lead. Prey finished the game two for three with two RBIs. Wilke was three for three with an RBI.
An RBI double by Kenny Casper, who had an RBI single in the second and finished the game three for five with three RBIs, capped the scoring in the fifth, giving Shawano a 7-5 advantage.
“We had to battle back hard,” Shawano coach Will Gillis said. “These past couple games we’ve been getting down early and coming back. I’m really happy with the fight, but I just wish we could get off to a little better start.”
Menominee responded in the top of the sixth by loading the bases on two walks and a single by Dallas Madosh. A bases-loaded walk cut Menominee’s deficit to one run and chased Brandon Cummings from the mound. Chase Henning came in and struck out Ty Latender, who was two for three at that point, to escape the inning.
Shawano then unloaded seven runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run single by Tommy Stueck and a double by Henning.
Henning allowed one hit and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work. He also went four for five with an RBI at the plate.
“He threw really well for us,” Gillis said. “He got the last four outs for us. It’s a good change-up. We had Brandon Cummings in there, who is more of a finesse pitcher, and then you bring in a guy who throws hard like Chase.”
Cummings pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits, struck out four and walked three. Jack Lacy started the game, allowing five runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of work, striking out one and walking four.
Menominee’s Michael Pecore scored on an overthrow at second in the first to give Menominee an early advantage. Shawano’s Tyler Cornelius hit an RBI single in the first to tie the game.
Menominee answered with four runs in the second, starting with an RBI single by Pecore, who finished two for three with an RBI. Lowell Chevalier then hit a two-run single to right field. Rainer Shooter added an RBI double to put Menominee up 5-1.
Chevalier went two for four with two RBIs. He pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on 14 hits and walking one. Nick Corn pitched 1/3 an inning, allowing seven runs on six hits, walking one and striking out one. Menominee turned to Tom Williams in the sixth, who allowed two hits.
