The 2013 racing season has most certainly reached its midpoint.
That being the case, the race to the point titles are beginning to come into focus.
The late model division this year was a bit of an unknown at the start of the year. Combining the old FASTRAK class and the former WISSOTA division into one class was questioned by some racers and fans alike. The on track product this year, though, has been improved over the past few seasons.
Car counts are probably the best in the state right now, along with the weekly payout, and the racing has been exceptional as well.
Defending track champion Nick Anvelink currently sits atop the point standings with a 20-point edge over four-time late model track champion Ron Berna and 20 points over Brett Swedberg.
2010 IMCA Modified track champion Jerry Wilinski has been on his game again this season and holds a 12-point lead over two-time defending IMCA Modified track champion Jason Czarapata.
Ageless Jerry Muenster at 70-plus years of age is third in points, 24 markers behind Wilinski.
Brandon Czarapata has been dominant this year in the IMCA Stock Car class by winning seven of the eight features raced this season. Czarapata is the defending national champion and is on a pace to win it again this year.
Rod Snellenberger, Mitch Stankowski and defending track champion Dan Michonski are within 17 points of Czarapata.
Tracy Wassenberg is back at the top of the IMCA Sport Modified standings just as he was at the end of last season.
Cody Hudson is only six points behind Wassenberg.
The Mighty 4s class is currently the tightest in regards to points. Jasper Drengler and Kasey Gross are tied for the lead. Trent Nolan, Jeff Behm and Calvin Stueck are all within five points though.
As I’ve noted in this column before, there have been some big first time wins the season. This past week was no different as popular well-traveled racer Jesse Peebles scored his first career IMCA Modified feature by surviving heavy pressure from Wilinski.
The modified win for Peebles makes it feature wins in three different divisions at the Shawano Speedway.
