We participated in our first classic car show last week. My husband bought a 1976 four-door hardtop Cadillac, which just fits into our garage (it’s l-o-n-g). We also have a 1989 Cadillac Brougham, which I actually like better, but it’s not my hobby. Anyway, we are a garage stall short, so the ‘89 Caddy has to go.
We took it to the car show to display it and hopefully find a buyer. It was a relaxing time, with everyone friendly and ready to share all the details of their special car. For the first hour, I sat in my lawn chair, sipping coffee and transcribing my SCAC meeting minutes (I never seem to get away from theater-related stuff). As the day went on, we walked around and viewed the other cars, discovering people we knew from the area. It was a fun day, but we still have the ‘89 Caddy!
The 45th annual Art and Craft Fair is coming up on July 28. Cheryl Folkerts, chairperson, has many vendors lined up to display their original works. The fair hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but a suggested donation of $2 is most welcome. Donuts and coffee are available in the morning. Sally’s Catering is offering a varied menu for lunch. With the completed expansion to the south side of the theater, and the new shelter at the northeast corner of the pond in the park, Cheryl had to re-locate some of the vendors. So, if your favorite artist or crafter isn’t in their usual spot, just look around and you’ll find them close by.
Auditions for “On Golden Pond” take place from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 1, 2-4 p.m. Aug. 3 and 2-4 p.m. Aug. 4. The play will be presented Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 25-27. Tom Webster will be directing. Call Tom at 715-526-9765 for further information.
On Aug. 9-11, the Mielke Park will be alive with music, as the 35th annual Shawano Folk Music Festival takes place. Friday and Saturday concerts feature four musical acts each night. As the music fades away, our first-ever Mielke Children’s Theatre Workshop begins! From 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 12-16, kids ages 6 to 14 will have fun learning how to be a part of a stage performance. The coaches will be Joe Engels and Megan Lisowe from Attic Theatre in Appleton. On Saturday, Aug. 17, the kids will present a matinee performance for their parents, relatives and whomever wants to come. You can register your child by calling Mary Beth Kuester at 715-823-5133. The fee per child is $10, but scholarships are available.
The Miles of Art Shawano Country takes place Oct. 5-6, and the Mielke Arts Center will be part of the tour. From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on both days, we will be displaying our award winning art collection and presenting live stage performances every hour, on the half hour. Excerpts from “On Golden Pond” and other theatrical classics will be presented. The Miles of Art is a wonderful event to showcase local artists, some in their own studios.
