All is right again. No panic attacks, no freaking, no yelling at something that can’t talk back to me. This monster that I once thought of as a friend is working again. From this day forward I will live in fear that it will turn on me once again.
This morning I turned on the computer; it didn’t do what it normally does. I had noticed yesterday that things were whacked and not looking right, and other stuff was popping up all over. I know I had just had it fixed earlier this year, so I wasn’t expecting it to give me trouble again this soon.
I guess it was my fault. I was trying to be proactive yesterday afternoon. All of a sudden pop-ups were telling me one of my programs was corrupt and I had to download the latest version. So I tried to do just that; however, it kept kicking out just when it was ready to finish.
Two hours later I thought I had the problem fixed, only to discover that suddenly my computer was possessed by more pop-ups and other things that I had no idea how to get rid of. Since that was a Sunday, I wasn’t able to call the computer doctors at Computer Haus and yell “help!” so I waited til Monday to see what would happen.
At first it just seemed slow and not working right. But I managed to get into Facebook and do my normal morning post. Then, a couple of hours later I was going to do another quick check. I got in, and as I was looking, another page took over. I did manage to get rid of that one, but then I got something that nearly knocked me off my chair.
I got the “Homeland Security” warning flash across the screen, and was told they locked my computer down.
OK, now I knew it was time to call in the experts. I was told I had to bring it in. All the way to Shawano all I could think of was that I was a good citizen. I paid my taxes, voted and wasn’t aware that Homeland Security even knew I existed.
It is amazing how things are never how they seem. The virus in my computer was a nasty one, but they were able to take care of the problem within a short amount of time. I was comforted to know that it really wasn’t Homeland Security that shut down my computer. Apparently there is also an FBI one going around.
Apparently those malwares and viruses are sneaky these days, and they come in not only with email, but also in other ways. It seems that every time I click on something on my computer, a bunch of other things are piggy-backing in also. That gives me pause for thought.
I do not spend a whole lot of time going from website to website. I don’t pay bills online, nor do I do my banking online. I rarely purchase things online. At this moment I am relieved with that fact. Perhaps if I were more confident on the computer I might feel different. But I find I am having a renewed respect of this modern convenience. It has changed a lot from the DOS I bought many years ago.
Meanwhile, while it sometimes brings panic, and causes frustration and yelling by me, I can’t imagine living without one either.
