The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School volleyball team remained undefeated as it rolled to a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 title Tuesday, defeating Weyauwega-Fremont 3-0 in the final game of pool play.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood (10-0 CWC-8) won 25-11, 25-17, 25-23.
Micah Nier had 11 kills nine digs and three aces. Taylor Bushman had 11 kills and 12 digs. Taylor Nier had six kills and 15 digs. Madison Bushman had 27 assists.
“By far this was the best game play this season,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Christine Nier said. “Weyauwega-Fremont is a strong team and gave us a great fight. At times we got behind, but the girls never gave up. I am really proud of them.”
The Chargers actually knew they would win the conference after the pool play session on Saturday. With Wittenberg-Birnamwood ahead of Weyauwega-Fremont 14-10 in conference points heading into the tournament, even a second-place finish would keep the Chargers ahead. First place in the tournament gets 14 points, second place 12.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood swept Iola-Scandinavia, Shiocton and Bonduel in Saturday’s pool play at WBHS.
Micah Nier had 31 kills, 21 digs, six blocks and five aces Saturday. Taylor Bushman had 26 kills and 17 digs. Madison Bushman had 56 assists. Taylor Nier had 12 kills, 16 digs and five aces. Mikayla King had 16 digs. Amanda Muscha had 14 digs. Hannah Buntrock and Danica Wendler had five blocks each.
“Every player contributed to the wins,” coach Nier said. “Winning the conference championship has been a team goal we’ve been talking about and working toward all season. It feels good to see it happen.”
Bonduel (4-7) also lost to Shiocton and Iola-Scandinavia in Saturday’s pool play. The Bears defeated Manawa on Tuesday, winning in five sets.
The Bears won the first two sets 25-23, 25-17, lost the next two 25-17, 25-15, and then won a close tiebreaker 17-15.
Alexa Reinke had 14 kills and 14 blocks. Courtney Schmidt had 20 assists. Nicki Chladek had 39 digs.
