McGrath picks up 1st Late Model win at speedway

Hot weather and hot action greeted race fans Saturday at Shawano Speedway. In one of the hotly contested features, Mitch McGrath made a late pass to win his first Late Model feature at the speedway. Brett Swedberg led much of the race before making contact with Jared Siefert, who had spun, on lap 17. Tom Naeyaert passed Swedberg as the race went back to green on lap 18. A caution on lap 23 set up a two-lap dash to the finish. On the restart, McGrath went to the outside of Naeyaert, took the lead and held it to the checkered flag. In other features, Jesse Peebles scored his first IMCA Modified victory of the season, Travis VanStraten kept his win streak going — winning his ninth in a row, Tracy Wassenberg scored his third IMCA Sport Mod win of the season, and Jasper Drengler won his second Mighty Four feature of the year. Late Model Swedberg started outside of row one and powered into the lead on the start. Swedberg looked to be in control and on his way to victory before making contact with Siefert. Swedberg got his spot back, but Naeyaert made the pass. With Naeyaert leading the race, McGrath began applying pressure. McGrath took the lead heading down the back stretch on lap 24. Naeyaert finished in second. Ron Berna finished third, Nick Anvelink took fourth, and Taylor Scheffler rounded out the top five. IMCA Modified Jesse Peebles started on the pole of the IMCA Modified feature and survived numerous restarts and challenges from John Berna on his way to victory lane. The race was shortened to 15 laps due to the cautions. Jerry Wilinski finished the race third, and Marcus Yarie finished fourth. IMCA Stock Car Trent Nolan led the opening lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature before being overtaken by Dan Michonski on lap two. Michonski was soon pressured for the lead by VanStraten. With Michonski still leading on lap seven, a caution flag flew, bunching up the field. On lap eight VanStraten took to the inside of Michonski and made a pass for the lead. VanStraten led the rest of the race, picking up his ninth win in a row and 10th overall. Michonski fended off Mike Schmidt to finish second. IMCA Sport Mod Wyatt Block raced his way from sixth and into the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Sport Mod feature. With Block still in control of the race, Wassenberg moved in to second on lap 10. Block continued to lead the way until lap 18 when Wassenberg moved inside of Block in turns three and four to take over the lead. Block finished second, while Lucas Lamberies took third. Mighty Four Jasper Drengler lead for the duration of the Mighty Four feature. Calvin Stueck finished second. Grant Kastning finished in the third position.
