Courtesy of a six-run seventh inning, the Shawano Lobos defeated the Cecil Mudhens 11-7 Wednesday in the Lobos invitational tournament.
With the win, the Lobos advanced to the tournament’s championship game at 8:30 p.m. Friday against Hofa Park, which defeated Pulaski 11-1 Wednesday.
With the score tied 5-5 entering the seventh, Ben Bystol doubled in Lucas Postl to give the Lobos the lead. Bryce Seymanski knocked in Riley Acra on a single. “In tournament games, we usually pitch people who do not normally pitch, so we played out of position here and there,” Shawano coach Will Gillis said. “But we usually put on a lot runs early and get complacent at the midpoint of games.”
Heinemeyer and Postl each went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Acra picked up the win in relief, pitching an inning and allowing one run on three hits.
Berg started for Shawano. In 5 1-3 innings, he allowed five runs on six hits, walked seven and struck out two.
Shawano jumped ahead with a four-run first inning, beginning with a Grant Bystol single to score Jake Heinemeyer. Following Lucas Postl’s single, Ben Bystol connected on a single to score Dylan Berg and Grant Bystol. Riley Acra capped off the inning with a single to score Postl.
Cecil responded with three runs in the second inning and tied the game in the third inning.
In the second, Derek Sumnicht drove in the first run on a based-loaded walk to score Mike Mitchell. Pat Wudke followed with a two-run single to score Zack Wallace and Cullen Kowalczyk.
Wallace singled in Brett Belongia with the tying run in the third.
In Shawano’s half of the fourth inning, Ryan Coffey scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error by second baseman Rick Alvarez.
Cecil tied it again at 5-5 in the sixth inning on a Tim Kroll single to score Wallace.
The Mudhens added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, one on a wild pitch to score Belongia and the other on a Sumnicht single to score Alvarez. Belongia led off the inning with a double.
Wallace was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and one RBI for Cecil.
Cullen Kowalczyk took the loss for Cecil, pitching seven innings and allowing 11 runs.
“He started getting tired since we did not have anyone available to pitch on a weeknight,” Cecil coach Tom Walenski said.
Cecil plays in the BABA, while the Lobos play in the Dairyland League.
