Micki Carlson received the 2012-13 Educator of Excellence Award for the Gillett School District. The Nicolet Oconto Retired Teachers Association sponsored the award. The Gillett School District faculty selected the recipient.
The award was presented to Carlson by Bette Meunier, representing NORTA. Meunier was Carlson’s high school chorus teacher, and Carlson completed her teaching internship with Meunier.
Carlson had been an educator for 27 years. She began her career at Shawano High School, where she was the vocal music director for six years. She accepted a position at Suring Schools in 1992 in order to teach in the community that was her home. Her husband, Todd, who worked with her, and their three children, Emily, Ashley and Brock, all made Suring School their home for several years.
Five years ago, Carlson made a career change, from Suring’s high school/middle school choir director to elementary music teacher at the Gillett School District.
Carlson has been active in many Wisconsin School Music Association and Wisconsin Choral Director Association boards, projects and committees, including serving as the WSMA state honors music project chair, the WCDA festival choir coordinator and convention presenter, WSMA Northeast District vice president and is currently on the WSMA State Music Festivals Board.
Carlson is a Kohl Fellowship recipient and was named the Shawano High School Dedicated Teacher of the Year in 1991.
Throughout her career, Carlson’s choirs have performed at many festivals, competitions and just about anywhere they would be asked to sing. Her fourth-grade students performed for a NORTA meeting this school year. She has had choirs perform in Carnegie Hall and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, and on the steps of our nation’s Capitol in Washington, D. C., to name just a few.
Carlson is an active member of Gillett Elementary PTO, helping with many activities, such as the Santa Secret Shoppe and the Tiger Chase 5K Run/Walk. She also organizes the veteran’s program and loves showing off her students’ talents at the Christmas and spring music programs.
The Carlsons make their home in rural Gillett on Micki’s family farm. She enjoys gardening, riding the Harley and spending time with her five grandchildren.
