James “Jimmy” Johnson, 90, Oconto Falls, died early Saturday morning, May 23, 2015, at Sharpe Care. He was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Stiles to John D. and Mary (Kinziger) Johnson.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Jimmy enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country during Word War II and the Korean War. On Oct. 9, 1954, he married Phyllis Plain at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls. Jimmy lived in Oconto Falls for most of his life. He was employed by the Scott Paper Co. in the purchasing department for many years. He was also a longtime member of River Island Golf Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and once worked following his retirement from the paper company. Also in retirement, Jimmy enjoyed helping his good friends at Gene’s Power Equipment and Magnin Hardware in Oconto Falls. Jim was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls and once volunteered on the Oconto Falls Fire Department.
Survivors are his wife, Phyllis Johnson, Oconto Falls; one sister, Mrs. Pat (Merrill) Aderman, Marinette; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sister M. Joanne, Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc; Joanne (Ray) Stewart, Mary B. (Wes) McNeal, all of Loudon, Tennessee; Kathleen (Perry) Ankerson, Green Bay; Bill Zietlow, Oconto Falls; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his only son, David Johnson, in 2012; one brother, John “Jack” (Dorothy) Johnson; three sisters, Kay (Eldo “Red”) Boetcher, Melba Funk and Lorriane (Ridge) Lemorande; and sisters-in-law, Lois (Bill) Johnston and Pat Zietlow.
Visitation will be held after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls until the time of service. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Unity Hospice.
