The Oconto Falls High School football team opened its North Eastern Conference season Friday night against Luxemburg-Casco, an old Bay Conference rival. Even with a move to the new conference, nothing has changed when it comes to the Spartans’ dominance.
L-C drubbed the Panthers 55-0 to close last season. To start this year, it was 46-0.
The Spartans controlled the line of scrimmage from the opening snap, stuffing two runs before Connor Scray was intercepted on his first throw of the season by defensive back Brogan Hall. After Hall’s return to the 10, Seth Peters ran for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead, and that was a sign of things to come.
After a quick three-and-out, the Panthers were able to get a stop, but a roughing the kicker penalty led to a Spartan first down. Luxemburg-Casco made them pay, sustaining a drive that ended in a 4-yard TD run by Peters.
The Panthers came out firing in the second quarter, forcing a turnover on downs and quickly getting a first down the very next play on a 14-yard scramble by Scray, but that was all they could muster as four plays later they would punt.
“We just struggled to put a complete series together,” Oconto Falls coach Jeff Trochil said. “It’s tough when you’re playing against a great team like Luxemburg-Casco.”
After that, the rout was on. The Spartans scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to push the lead to 34. Then, if there was any bite remaining in the Panthers, it was quickly gone after Kyle Rothieaux started the second half with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
As the score suggests, the Spartans pushed the Panthers around the field the whole game, finishing with 390 total yards to the Panthers' 62. Oconto Falls averaged just 1.6 yards per carry on the ground.
Scray led the Panthers with 41 yards rushing and 29 yards through the air with five completions on 12 attempts.
For the Spartans, Seth Peters could not be stopped. He gained 158 yards and scored three touchdowns on 15 carries. He also had 67 yards receiving on three catches.
Although the Panthers couldn’t keep up with the speed of Peters, Trochil was impressed with his players' attitude.
“I liked the fight the kids had; they fought all four quarters and never gave up,” Trochil said. “I saw some great leadership on the field and great desire. We’ve got some great tools to work with.”
There were also a few bright spots. The return game was strong. The defense looked decent, allowing 33 of the 46 points.
“Early in the game we forced them to punt. … That was huge in the game proving we can play against these guys,” Trochil said. “We’re getting there, we just have to have faith in the process.”
