Parents and caregivers can develop and practice problem-solving skills at the “Raising a Thinking Child Workshop” for parents of 4- to 7-year-old children.
The workshop takes place from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 24 to Nov. 5 at Oconto Elementary School. Registration is limited and due by Sept. 17. There is a $15 materials fee for this class, and financial assistance is available. Free child care is available for children of participants.
Words parents and caregivers use with children set the stage for a child to think and independently solve problems, according to the program. Children need practice thinking of alternatives and developing their problem-solving skills.
Participants will learn to use problem-solving “discipline ladder,” use word pairs to build a vocabulary for problem solving and give children skills to solve problems taking into account their own and others’ feelings.
The workbook offers activities and games to make learning to problem solve fun for both the children and caregivers. Children as young as 4 years old can learn to think for themselves in ways most of us never thought possible.
The program will also help shy children to become more assertive and impulsive children to cope with frustration when things don’t go their way. The skills children learn through this program can prevent and reduce early behaviors that predict later problems such as violence, substance abuse and depression.
