Going into its final match, the Suring High School volleyball team, which was 2-6 at the time, had no idea how big of an impact a victory could have on the Bonduel Invitational on Sept. 1.
After losing to Laona-Wabeno, Waupaca and Bonduel, the Eagles were set to face Omro in the fourth match of the day.
Omro sat in first place, needing a win to stay ahead of the host Bears for the championship title. Bonduel had defeated its final opponent, Waupaca, to move into a tie with Omro for the lead.
Suring battled the Foxes, losing the first set and escaping the second set with a victory.
Bonduel fans gathered at the door of the Bonduel Middle School gym, hoping their energy could secure a victory for Suring, and subsequently, their girls. But it was not enough.
Suring led late in the game, 11-9, before falling to the Foxes, 15-13.
“We didn’t realize that was the determining match, so we didn’t have that idea,” Suring head coach Tonia Kruschke said. “I think that down the stretch, we need to play when it’s hot and we’re tired and want to go home.”
The Eagles took three of their four matches into a deciding third set but could not find a match victory all night.
“We realized some of the things that we still need to work on,” Kruschke said.
