Students participate in Walk to School event

Safe Kids Oconto County and Oconto Elementary School faculty, parents and students participated in International Walk to School Day on Oct. 7. Safe Kids Oconto County received a grant to promote pedestrian safety, and the organization teamed up with Oconto Elementary School and Stephanie Stauss, Oconto School District nurse, to organize the event. Attending the event were Oconto Mayor Victoria Bostedt and members of the Oconto Police Department and Oconto Fire and Rescue Department. Over 100 students walked to school and were accompanied by Safe Kids Oconto County members, teachers and parents. Prior to the event, every student in 4-year-old kindergarten to first grade received a copy of a Clifford the Red Dog book about pedestrian safety, sponsored by FedEx. Older elementary children received an activity book sponsored by FedEx as well. On Oct. 7, each participating child received a Safe Kids reflector and refreshments.
