Simonis hired as Gillett special ed director

The Gillett School District has a new director of special education and student services. The school board voted July 17 to hire Wendy Simonis for the post. The former director, Jessica Cappeart, recently informed the district she is taking a position with CESA 7. Superintendent Nathan Hanson told the board that seven people applied for the job, and three came in for interviews. A nine-person committee selected by Hanson and the building principals met with the candidates on July 15 and unanimously selected Simonis. “Committee members were excited about Wendy’s personality and experience,” Hanson said. “She has been an interpreter for the deaf, she’s been a special education teacher and leader with the Antigo School District for a decade, currently sits on the WCASS (Wisconsin Council of Administrators of Special Services) board of directors and is coming to us after five years as the director of special education for the Tomahawk School District.” Hanson noted that he worked with Simonis for two years during his own tenure in Antigo. “I can tell you she’s a top-notch candidate, and we’re absolutely lucky to have her here,” he said. wbluhm@newmedia-wi.com
