Wisconsin had 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 12, 2024, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Planting progress was slowed as wet conditions continued throughout most the state. The rain was beneficial to wheat and alfalfa. Field activities included tillage, planting, and fertilizer application as conditions allowed. There were some scattered reports of hay cutting.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 1% very short, 8% short, 71% adequate and 20% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 1% very short, 11% short, 74% adequate and 14% surplus.
Corn planting was 40% complete, three days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the five-year average. Corn emergence was 8% complete.
Soybean planting was 37% complete, five days ahead of last year and four days ahead of average. Soybean emergence was 6% complete.
Oat planting progress was 68% complete, six days ahead of last year and three days ahead of average. Oat emergence was 38% complete.
Eighty percent of potato acreage has been planted, eight days ahead of last year and six days ahead of average.
Spring tillage was 71% complete, six days ahead of last year and three days ahead of average.
Winter wheat condition was rated 85% good to excellent statewide, down 1% from last week. All hay condition remained rated at 74% good to excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 59% good to excellent statewide, up 4% from last week.
