Six members of the Shawano Hawks track and field team received invitations to compete in the elite Hale Distance Night in West Allis.
In this unique meet, only the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs are contested, and it draws many of the best runners from across the state. All runners must meet qualifying standards to be offered a chance to compete, and it is in many ways a preview to the Wisconsin state track meet. Despite cold and windy conditions, the rain held off.
Junior Adalyn Barkley, ran a personal best time of 2:21.64 in the girls 800, winning her heat and placing sixth overall out of the 26 girls competing in the event. She is now the second-fastest girls 800 runner in SCHS history.
Senior Grace Chelberg came in 15th in 2:26.19, while sophomore Bailey Hendricks came in 20th in a time of 2:29.99. Senior Lily Guenther ran the second-fastest girls 3,200 in SCHS history. She finished in 13th out of 21 girls competing, turning in a season best time of 11:43.87.
Senior Ethan Onesti ran a personal best time of 2:01.21 in the 800, taking 22nd place out of the 33 boys competing.
Senior Will Chelberg posted the fourth-fastest boys 3,200 time in SCHS history when he capped off the night with a personal best time of 9:39.75, taking 16th place out of the field of 35.
“Our four girls all gained experience racing at the state track and field championship last spring in La Crosse, and all six of these kids have run in multiple Wisconsin state cross country meets,” coach Joe Guenther said. “Running at a meet like this was great for the kids to get the opportunity to challenge themselves against some of the best runners in the state, and (it will) help prepare them for the tough races that will come at the end of May as they try to earn trips to La Crosse once again.”
