While deputies, first responders and passersby were tending to the driver of a fatal crash on U.S. 41-141 on March 19, a second crash occurred at the scene, killing another driver.
According to a news release from Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban, the emergency dispatch center received a call at 10:08 a.m. about the one-vehicle crash just north of Brown Road in the Town of Little Suamico.
“Deputies immediately responded to the scene of the accident and observed a pickup truck in the median, facing south, resting against the cable barrier with a male driver who was reported as unresponsive,” Skarban said.
A passing motorist stopped his equipment truck on the shoulder of the northbound lane to offer assistance. Skarban said while deputies and first responders extracted the pickup truck driver and applied life-saving measures, a northbound van struck the equipment truck parked on the side of the road.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 32-year-old man from Oconto, died at the scene. The driver of the van, a 66-year-old man from Manitowoc, died at the scene as a result of injuries from the crash.
A passenger in the van, a 73-year-old woman from Manitowoc, was flown by Eagle III rescue helicopter to a hospital in Green Bay for treatment of her injuries, Skarban said.
The victims were not immediately identified. The sheriff said the department is getting help from the Brown County Medical Examiner Office and Wisconsin State Patrol. Assisting at the scene were fire departments from Little Suamico, Abrams, Suamico, Pulaski and Oconto, as well as NEW Ambulance, Oconto County Emergency Management, and the Brown and Oconto counties highway departments.
