The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls track and field team scored 149.5 points and placed second out of eight teams at the Northland Pines Indoor Invitational on March 14 in Eagle River. The boys team placed 10th out of 10 teams with 14 points.
Menominee Indian’s boys were fourth with 65 points, and the girls were fifth with 48 points.
Both teams captured a few first-place finishes.
Urijah Reevis, a Menominee Indian sophomore, ran to first place in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.17. Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman Harper Rogowski placed third in 1:06.63, and fellow freshman Ava Brei was fourth in 1:08.38.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood junior Faith Resch placed first in the 200-meter hurdles in 30.06. Teammates Jayden Zeinert, a junior, and freshman Kelsie Davis placed fourth (36.49) and seventh (38.1), respectively.
In the 800-meter run, Chargers freshman Nora Bushman captured first (2:42.73), Charger junior Kylee Beversdorf was second (2:46.24), and Reevis was third (2:49.12). Also competing were Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshmen Lily Metropulos, fifth (2:58.3), Charlie Eichman, sixth (3:02.81) and Gabrielle Timm, ninth (3:06.71).
Resch won the high jump at 4-10. Joining her were teammates Metropulos, second place, 4-6; Brei, fourth, 4-4; and Eichman, seventh, 4-0.
A Chargers foursome placed first in the girls 4x800-meter relay in 11:37.61. Wittenberg-Birnamwood also grabbed first in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:36.46.
Barron Waupoose, an Eagle sophomore, led the field with a first-place finish in the boys 400-meter dash in 54.5. Wittenberg-Birnamwood sophomore Donald Komosa was fourth in 1:00.25. Also running were Menominee Indian junior Francis Delabrau, seventh, 1:03.81; Eagle junior Luis Kakkah, 15th, 1:09.66; and Eagle freshman Lumar Mahkimetas, 17th, 1:12.62.
Girls events
In the girls 55-meter hurdles, Wittenberg-Birnamwood captured places two through four. Resch was second in 9.63, Davis was third in 11.6 and Zeinert was fourth in 11.78.
In the 55-meter dash, it was Menominee Indian sophomore Madeline Tomow with the best finish, placing eighth in 8.36. Competing teammates were junior Alexis Zhuckkahosee, 11th, 8.47; sophomore Rikki Latender, 22nd, 8.99; and freshman Ti Anna Waukau, 30th, 9.21.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood runners were Rogowski, 12th, 8.54; sophomore Reese Dickman, 18th, 8.87; freshman Kaitlin Tushkowski, 19th, 8.88; Davis, 28th, 9.19; and senior Kaydence Burclaw, 37th, 9.98.
Three freshman Chargers placed in the top seven in the 1,600-meter run. They were Bushman, second, 5:56.69; Timm, sixth, 6:48.01; and Eichman, seventh, 6:53.32.
The Eagles 4x200-meter relay team placed second in 2:06.64, just in front of the Chargers, who placed third in 2:06.77.
Each team had five runners in the 200-meter dash; among them, they captured five of the top 10 finishes.
For the Chargers, it was Rogowski in fifth in 30.12, Brei in eighth in 30.49, Metropulos in ninth in 30.67, Dickman in 13th in 31.84 and Tushkowski in 18th in 33.08.
For the Eagles, it was junior Lena Waukau in sixth in 30.22, junior Alexis Zhuckkahosee in 10th in 30.87, Tomow in 12th in 30.95, Ti Anna Waukau in 20th in 33.49 and Latender in 24th in 34.45.
Tomow earned third place in the long jump at 15-6, while Reevis was fourth at 14-9.5.
Lena Waukau placed third in the triple jump with a total of 30-2.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the second- and third-place spots in the shot put. Davis was second at 28-5, and Burclaw was third at 27-3. Menominee Indian freshman Shia Madosh was seventh at 23-8.5.
Boys events
In the boys 55-meter dash, Komosa led the local runners with a 13th-place finish in 7.57 seconds. Charger teammates joining him on the track were junior Michael Gunter, 19th, 7.73; sophomore Robert Jensen, 38th, 8.59; junior Landen Schmidt, 40th, 8.71; and sophomore Mason Wierzba, 44th, 9.5.
Running for the Eagles were junior Jaycen Waupoose, 23rd place, 7.82; senior Mitchell Perez, 25th, 7.91; sophomore Damon Fowler, 28th, 8 seconds; junior Vincent Fish, 33rd, 8.15; and senior Nakadin Boyd, 35th, 8.24.
Menominee Indian senior Julius Kaquatosh placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:33.01, and Chargers freshman Marty Nowinsky placed 10th in 6:28.83.
The Eagles foursome placed seventh in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:59.2.
Perez placed sixth in the 200-meter hurdles in 31.97.
Barron Waupoose placed second in the 800-meter run in 2:17.62, and Nowinsky was eighth in 2:54.82.
The 200-meter dash included Charger teammates Komosa, 11th, 27.56; Gunter, 15th, 28.04; and Jensen, 25th, 30.25. Eagle runners were Delabrau, 14th, 27.72; junior Anthony Silas, 26th, 30.26; Boyd, 29th, 30.64; and Kakkak, 30th, 31.19.
Menominee Indian captured three of the top six spots in the high jump. Sophomore Kenew Awonohopay and Barron Waupoose were third and fourth, respectively, at 5-2, and Fowler was sixth at 5-0. Silas and the Chargers’ Komosa placed 11th at 4-10.
Awonohopay’s jump of 17-10 placed him third in the long jump, while Fowler was sixth at 16-6, Fish was 18th at 14-2, and Mahkimetas was 19th at 13-11.
Awonohopay captured second in the triple jump at 38-9. Teammates competing were Kaquatosh, seventh, 33-10.5; Jaycen Waupoose, eighth, 33-9; and Kakkak, 12th, 29-7.
Schmidt placed second with a throw of 40-10.5 in the shot put. Joining him on the field for the competition were Wierzba, 13th, 31-8.5; Jensen, 19th, 30-8.5; and Eagle junior Rayshawn Madosh, 33rd, 26-10.
