Man dies in Navarino fire

One person died and another was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries as the result of a brush fire in the Town of Navarino on March 7. At about 11:35 a.m., Shawano County deputies responded to the area of Wildwood Road near Townline Road in the Town of Navarino for a fire-related incident. Upon their arrival, they found an active wildfire burning a large amount of acreage. Deputies were met by the caller who had burn-related injuries. She reported her husband was still in the area where the fire was active. Deputies entered the reported area and found the man already deceased. The woman was transported via ambulance for her injuries. The man and woman were burning brush in a burn pit prior to the fire spreading and getting out of control. Fire crews arrived on scene and got the fire under control and contained. Shawano County Sheriff’s Department detectives responded to this scene and are handling the death investigation portion of this incident. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division also responded and is handling the fire investigation side of this incident. At this time, both portions of this incident are still under investigation and no further information will be released. The sheriff’s departmentwas assisted on scene by the Wisconsin DNR, Navarino-Lessor Fire Department, Clintonville Ambulance and the Shawano County Coroner’s Office.
