A 78-year-old man who was found dead at Lulu Lake early Christmas Day morning was identified as Karl E. “Butch” Barkow Sr., according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office.
Coroner Brian Westfahl said Jan. 12 Barkow died from drowning.
According to an earlier new release by the sheriff’s office, concerned family members called the sheriff’s office Dec. 24 saying Barkow was missing around 4:30 p.m.
He went fishing on Lulu Lake that day and had not returned home.
People found his vehicle near a boat landing and some ice fishing gear on the lake.
Deputies and the Shawano Area Fire Department found an open hole in the ice near the fishing gear. Rescue and recovery efforts stopped that night when it got too dark outside and restarted early Dec. 25.
As a member of the Walleyes for Tomorrow, he loved mentoring children about the outdoors and especially fishing. Barkow was a member of the Shawano Masonic Lodge 170, Walleyes for Tomorrow, Shawano Fish and Game Club, Shawano Gun Club, N.E.W. Beagle Club, Braw Bluebird Restoration of Wisconsin and White Clay Lake Sportsman Club.
Barkow is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons, Kevin (Tammy) Barkow and Karl Barkow Jr.; four grandchildren; and a brother.
Funeral services were held Dec. 30.
