Oconto lynching to be discussed at program

The Oconto County Historical Society will be discussing a lynching in Oconto when it presents its monthly speaker series program at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 in the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum meeting room, 915 Park Ave., Oconto. Back in the dim history of Oconto, when the now peaceful city was a booming lumber town, there hangs a tale of lynching a murderer on the courthouse lawn on May 2, 1871. The evening’s program will be the telling of the account of the hanging of Louis Nohr. An eyewitness told what happened to Giles V. Megan, an Oconto resident, who wrote down the chronicle of events that led to the hanging. This was sensational news, and newspapers also carried the story. Some of these newspaper articles will be shared during the program. The evening’s presenters are Kitty Werner, Oconto County historian; David Retzlaff; David Hall; and Oconto County Historical Society board members Pete Stark and Bob Klozotsky. The program is free. Light refreshments will be served.
