Tyson Lyons and Kaiden Thornborrow were busy in the net combining for 30 saves but letting seven pucks get through as Shawano/Bonduel lost 7-2 to Waupaca in boys hockey Nov. 28.
The Comets didn’t wait long to strike, scoring at 2:40 in the first period. It took a chunk of time, but Shawano/Bonduel tied the game at 1-1 at 9:05 with a power-play goal by Gavin Hundt with assists from Blake Knope and Cam Schroeder.
Waupaca wasn’t done, as they scored just 45 seconds later to take the lead and then two more goals in the first period to lead 4-1.
“Tough night for us in the home opener,” Hawks coach Adam Gafner said. “Unfortunately, we were chasing from the get-go. We talked about having a great start and setting the tone in the first period, and unfortunately, it didn’t happen with us getting down 4-1.”
Karson Stoss scored the second goal for Shawano/Bonduel at 1:39 in the second period. Knope got the assist.
But that would be it for the home team. Waupaca scored twice in the second period and once in the third.
“Our in-zone coverage has been an issue against top lines the first two games, and we need to get that fixed,” Gafner said. “Similar to the Rhinelander game, we spent way too much time in the penalty box.”
Waupaca spent 10 minutes in the penalty box on five infractions, while Shawano/Bonduel was called for seven infractions and served 17 minutes.
Lyons was in the net for two periods, saved 16 and allowed six goals. Thornborrow worked one period, saved 14 and let up one goal.
Shawano/Bonduel had 18 shots on goal.
“Hockey, like all team sports, is a team game,” Gafner said. “Right now, as a group, we need to pull together for each other before Northland Pines comes in next Tuesday (Dec. 1).”
The loss dropped the Hawks to 0-2, while the Comets improved to 3-2.
