On Nov. 8, the Marinette and Oconto Counties Literacy Council held its annual Recognition Day with a luncheon at the Pound Town Hall. The purpose of the event is to recognize and honor the organization’s tutors and the students they serve.
The event featured speeches by Jan Glime, the organization’s founder, and Mary Navarro, manager of the BMO Harris Bank in Oconto Falls.
Student Judy VanNorman read a humorous story, and Chris Verges, VanNorman’s tutor, spoke on behalf of all tutors. In attendance were members of the Literacy Council’s board of directors, students and tutors.
The M & O Literacy Council has been in existence a little over two years. At the time of its foundation, it served a distinct need, as Marinette and Oconto counties were the only counties in the state without an organization to serve adult students who needed assistance with their reading skills.
The council has trained 30 tutors. There are 14 active tutor/student pairs and a waiting list of eight students. The council has served students from eight countries. All tutors and board members are unpaid volunteers.
