Clare Martell won a sectional championship, Ali Hanson qualified for state in two individual events and the Shawano/Bonduel high school girls swim team qualified a relay team for state Saturday at the WIAA Division 1 sectional in Neenah.
Martell, who has dominated the 100-yard breaststroke all season, finished in 1:06.10 at the sectional, busting the school record (1:07.42) she set as a freshman to earn her second appearance at the state meet.
“I was really excited,” Martell said. “As a freshman last year, I went in seeded first and I didn’t get first. This year I was, ‘No, I’m not going to get beat this year.’ I haven’t had any losses in the conference, so I wanted to keep that going.”
Martell’s time also qualified her for the National Club Swimming Association’s Junior Nationals.
“Clare’s race was so exciting because she had been going for a certain time that is a (National Club Swimming Association) Junior National time and she got it,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said. “That was very, very exciting. She was shooting for a 1:05 and she got very close with a 1:06.10.”
In the 200 individual medley, Martell, a sophomore from Bonduel, took sixth place with a time of 2:17.21.
Hanson, a SCHS junior, qualified for state in both of her events. In the 50 freestyle she clocked in at a school-best 24.35, taking second in the event. Pulaski’s Corrin VanLanen finished first with a time of 23.86.
In the 100 freestyle, Hanson came in third with a time of 53.25. Appleton North’s Britt Horn took first with a time of 51.33.
“In the 100 free, she had just about her best time,” said coach Hanson, who is Ali’s mother. “She was right there.”
Also heading to state is the 200 medley relay team of Martell, Hanson, Malory Soper, Ailysh Tetting and alternate Whitney Banker, which finished third with a time of 1:52.92.
“It was exciting. We all swam best times,” Martell said. “It was exciting because we all clicked right at the right moment to make it down to state.”
Appleton North finished first at 1:50.05 and Neenah (1:50.36) took second. The Hawks shaved nearly 2 seconds off their seed time to make the jump to third and to state.
“It means everyone is cutting time off of a 50, which is really hard to do,” Sharon Hanson said. “That was a really good race.”
Hanson said she was pleased with her team on Saturday and is looking forward to seeing her girls compete at the state meet this weekend in Madison.
“Almost everyone swam personal bests on Saturday,” She said. “Very good races. Everyone did really well. Good end to the season for the rest of the group. These girls that are still swimming did fabulous. They’re going to do good this weekend.”
Division 2
Gabrielle Goerlinger led the Clintonville girls swim team, taking home two sectional titles by winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.65 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.09.
The Truckers finished seventh. Ladysmith/Bruce/Flambeau won the event. Wittenberg-Birnamwood took 15th.
