Harold L. “Hal” Koenig, 87, of Cecil, passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 16, 2013, at ManorCare of Shawano.
Harold was born on Oct. 28, 1925, in Shawano, a son of the late Emil and Hertha (Burhrandt) Koenig.
He attended the Shawano schools and was a 1943 graduate of Shawano High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II. Harold served in the European Theater and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He earned two Bronze Stars for his service. While stationed in Germany, he met his future wife, Irene.
On March 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to the former Irene Sapenko at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Illinois, where Hal was employed with the Schultz Brothers Company. The couple later moved to Green Bay, where Hal was in charge of opening and managing a new Ben Franklin Store. They stayed in Green Bay for more than 30 years.
Hal later accepted a position with the National Federation of Independent Business, where he worked as a field rep and later was promoted to division manager and was responsible for covering five states. In 1983, the couple moved to Shawano when they had an opportunity to purchase the Hallmark store and get back closer to the Koenig family. The store is known as Hal’s Hallmark of Shawano.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Hal loved his country and was extremely fond of politics. He was very compassionate to both the youth and the elderly.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 65 years, Irene Koenig, of Cecil; his loving son, Bruce Koenig, of Green Bay, and his granddaughter, Nikki Koenig, also of Green Bay; his nephews, Gerald (Alyce) Koenig of Sussex, Stanley (Sandy) Koenig, of Gillett, Stephen (Cheryl) Koenig, of Shawano, and Daniel (Sue) Reichel, of Arizona. Many great-nephews and nieces also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Erwin Koenig, and a sister, Eleanor Reichel.
Funeral services for Harold Koenig will be held on Monday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Pastor Ted Andrada will officiate. Interment, with full military honors conducted by Shawano American Legion Post 117, will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery of Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service.
In lieu of flowers and plants, the family prefers memorials in his name for the Wounded Warrior Project or for dementia research.
