The city of Gillett has entered into a five-year contract, to begin in January, for the collection of garbage and recyclables.
The City Council on Dec. 3 approved a contract with Great American Disposal, which has its corporate office in Kingsford, Michigan, and a location in Suamico.
Under the terms of the contract, the city will pay $3,658 a month for garbage and recycling pickup and $45 per ton for tipping fees. The city plans to sell its garbage truck and reassign the employees who collect garbage to new duties. The city discontinued commercial garbage pickup on Aug. 1.
The council also approved the issuance of residential identification cards, one per household.
“As soon as they have their taxes paid, they can stop by City Hall and pick them up,” said Vicki Engebretsen, deputy clerk/deputy treasurer.
City residents will be required to show these cards at the recycling center before being allowed to drop off items. The recycling center, located at 310 W. Park St. in the industrial park, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
With GAD, the city will switch to single-stream recycling, in which recyclables are mingled.
The city will drop its recycling partnership with Oconto County on Jan. 1, choosing instead to be the responsible unit for recyclable collection. It also will drop its partnership with the town of Gillett. The city and town now operate a joint recycling center.
After Jan. 1, the town plans to collect recyclables at the Town Hall, 10908 Town Hall Road.
To cover the cost of refuse collection, the City Council upped the fee for garbage collection from $78 to $90 per property. With the change, the city projects it will collect $54,630 in 2016, compared with $47,346 in 2015.
The city will continue to use its sticker system. Residents are invoiced $90 annually on their property tax bills, which is the cost to purchase 52 stickers — one per week for a year. Additional stickers may be purchased for $1.50 at City Hall. These stickers are placed on the garbage bags.
