U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher announced March 22 he will resign his seat in Congress effective April 19.
He had earlier announced he would not seek another term in the November election.
“After conversations with my family, I have made the decision to resign my position as a member of the House of Representatives for Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District,” he said. “I’ve worked closely with House Republican leadership on this timeline and look forward to seeing Speaker (Mike) Johnson (R-LA) appoint a new chair to carry out the important mission of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.”
Gallagher said his office will continue to operate and provide constituent services to the 8th District for the remainder of the term.
Former state Sen. Roger Roth, a Republican who is running for the seat, praised Gallagher’s work in Congress.
“While I wish he would have finished out his term, I appreciate Congressman Gallagher’s service to northeast Wisconsin, particularly his work to fight the Chinese Communist Party,” Roth said.
Roth is a third-generation home builder in northeast Wisconsin and a captain in the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
