Elaine C. Starks, 90, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, Oct. 18, 2013, at Maple Lane Health Care Center following a brief illness. Elaine was born Oct. 24, 1923, in New London, a daughter of the late Melvin and Delaphine (Cox) Pieper.
Elaine graduated from Shawano High School in 1941. On July 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harold J. Starks in a lawn ceremony, which originally was to take place at St James Lutheran Church in Shawano. However, the church had burned down. Elaine had been employed in the mail order department at the Montgomery Ward Store here in Shawano for over 23 years.
She had been a good and faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church her entire life. She was also a lifetime member of the Shawano County Fair. Elaine loved her church, her family, spending time at the cottage on Berry Lake and watching the Green Bay Packers. Her husband, Harold, preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 2008.
Elaine is survived by her two sons, James Starks, of Shawano, and Jeffrey (Sharon) Starks, of Marinette; one granddaughter, Jennifer Starks, of Haines City, Fla; and one grandson, Adam (Rachael Bullock) Starks, of Appleton. She is further survived by three great-grandchildren, Symphoney and Gage Starks, of Haines City, Fla., and Taylor Starks, of Appleton; and one great-great-granddaughter, Paytyn Starks, also of Haines City. Elaine has a dear cousin, Karen (Cox-Badeau) Stoffel, surviving her.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Marvin Pieper.
Funeral services for Elaine Starks will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Pastor Ted Andrada will officiate. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at St. James Lutheran Church after 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the hour of service.
In lieu of flowers and plants, it was Elaine’s request that memorials be directed to St. James Lutheran School in her name.
