Ralph Huebner and his sons, Nathaniel and Gabe, make Christmas trees of a different kind — chainsaw Christmas tree carvings made of soft woods of pine, hemlock and cedar.
Ralph, who is a carpenter, made the trees himself last year, but thought this year his sons could help.
“This summer I thought the boys could work on some to make some extra money,” Huebner said.
He bought a small chain saw for Nathaniel, 15, a sophomore at Shawano Community High School, and Gabe, 14, an eighth-grader at Shawano Community Middle School.
The family lives west of Shawano in the town of Herman on 120 acres, including wooded areas that provide plenty of material for the holiday project.
First they cut the base and then use the chain saw to make the shape and notch it. The size of the log determines the size of the Christmas tree.
At the beginning it was a learning process for the boys.
“We cut some right in half,” Gabe said.
The trees come in four sizes. Lights and other decorations can be attached.
“They’re all a little different and have their own unique shape,” Nathaniel said.
The trees run from $15 to $45, with the smallest 18 inches and the largest 4 1/2 feet.
They will also do special orders.
The trees can be seen at in the window of Michael’s Family Hair Care Center at 613 S. Main St. in Shawano.
