The hard-hitting and hard-serving Menominee Indian Eagles jumped out to early leads in each of the first two sets in their Central Wisconsin Conference-10 volleyball match with Tigerton on Tuesday.
Tigerton, however, became more confident and made runs each time, first to take a four-point lead, 23-19, in the first game and then to tie the second game at 23.
Each time, the Eagles were able to persevere, though, en route to a 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the visitors.
“Tonight was a great game,” MIHS coach Colette White said. “Menominee wanted the game to be theirs, and they are improving each game as a team.”
The third and final game started with a run for Tigerton (7-7 3-4 CWC-10), which went up 9-5, prompting a timeout by White.
Freshman Jalen Corn shifted the lead back to the Eagles on her service, and another run with Autumn McPherson serving pushed MIHS ahead, 18-11 — a lead it maintained for the 25-18 win.
Menominee Indian continuously attacked at the net and was able to win the longer points. The Eagles also played strong defense, not allowing hits to touch the floor. Three players recorded double-digit digs.
Jalen Corn had 14 digs to lead the Eagles. Senior Taylor Mahkimetas tallied 12 digs, 12 assists and six kills on the night. Fellow senior Kelsey Corn added seven kills and 12 digs.
“They are eliminating errors, playing smart, and it showed tonight,” White said.
Tigerton head coach Holly Block said the Tigers could not rally when things didn’t go their way.
“I think when the confidence comes back, then they play well,” Block said. “When they make one mistake, they hang their head. It doesn’t take much right now. … They are not as aggressive. They don’t have that instinct to just get it done.”
