Gillett School District Superintendent Todd Carlson was named head coach of the high school boys basketball team at the School Board meeting on Thursday.
“I’m going to try to help out in a position that’s needed,” Carlson said.
The Tigers now will have had four coaches over the past four seasons. Jeff Cross resigned in July after one season at the helm.
District resident Penny Heroux spoke to the board during the community comments section of Thursday’s meeting, expressing concerns about coaching continuity in the program.
“There have been three different coaches over the last three years. And with the resignation of the current coach, that makes four,” Heroux said.
Heroux said it is difficult for kids to get used to a coach with changes occurring every year. She also said the teams need more practice space.
She said there are several groups vying for gym time. Girls, for example, often practice on Sunday mornings.
School teams have to compete for gym time with teams that are part of the Gillett Nets Booster Club, a nonprofit organization serving students in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades, Heroux explained.
“If we all work together, we can get there,” said Carlson, whose most recent coaching position was with the boys program at Suring from 2005-2010, compiling a 108-19 record.
