Shawano’s boys wrestling team earned a fourth-place finish at the Holiday Classic it hosted Dec. 16.
Drake Herm captured the championship at the 144-pound weight class.
“Drake is a hard worker, a great kid and an outstanding teammate,” coach Mike Homan said. “I really like the way he attacks people from the neutral position. His takedowns are something special, and he is always ready to go.”
Carsen Herm took second place.
Dylan Gartner wrestled well at 106 pounds and finished in fourth place.
“We look forward to seeing his hard work continue as we move into the later part of the season,” Homan said.
Dane Hodkiewicz took fifth place at 113. “Dane has been working hard, and competing with some tough competition; it was nice to see him finish well this weekend at our home tournament,” Homan said.
Owen Montour took fourth place today at 132.
Shawano tops Seymour
Shawano’s boys wrestling team improved to 5-3 with a 49-16 win over Seymour on Dec. 14.
“We started at 215 tonight,” Homan said. “We took some losses right away but did a pretty good job giving up decisions and not falls. We talked as a team about how important it would be to fight off near-fall situations; oftentimes that is the difference in big matches.”
Kia Waukau had a big win at heavyweight in an overtime match, which got some momentum back for the Hawks.
Shawano picked up a big win at 120 by Chris Hammen-Jung and then took forfeits at 126, 138 and 150.
“We picked up some tight wins at 144 and 157. Drake and Carsen (Herm) continue to wrestle tough and aggressive matches; both were in control the entire match,” Homan said. “We finished the dual off well scoring falls at 165, 175 and 190. Drew Chelberg, Mason Theis and Connor Chelberg all continue to work hard in practice, and it shows on the mat. They all took advantage of their matches tonight and earned the team big bonus points. We have a good amount of work to do but will continue to work on it as we progress through the season.”
Wrestling at Bay Port
Shawano wrestlers competed against others from multiple schools at Bay Port on Dec. 9.
The team wrestled 30 teams from around the state. Place winners were Dane Hodkiewicz in 13th, Kody Popelka in seventh, Carsen Herm in sixth and Connor Chelberg in 10th.
Lena finishes fourth
Lena’s boys wrestling team finished in fourth place at home Dec. 14. Ashwaubenon placed first, Peshtigo was second and in third was Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes.
In Round 1, Pestigo topped Lena 60-16. Ashwaubenon topped Lena 51-30 in Round 2 and Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes defeated Lena 66-11 in Round 3.
Wins against Peshtigo were Sam Peterson with a 12-2 major decision, Lucas Heimke with a pin in 3:07 and Max Peterson with a pin in 2:38.
Against Ashwaubenon, Sam Peterson won by pinfall in 2:33, Heimke by pin in 1:58, Max Peterson by pin in 2:26, Collin VanArk by pin in 1:04 and Dylan Urbanek by pin in 2:26.
Lena’s wins over Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes were by Sam Peterson with a 2-0 decision, Heimke with a 10-8 decision and Max Peterson by technical fall 17-2.
