Winning its second conference title in 36 years, the Bonduel High School boys cross-country team dominated the Central Wisconsin Conference championships Thursday in Wittenberg.
The Bears had four runners in the top 10. Sam Falck took the top spot, finishing first with a time of 17 minutes, 31 seconds. Isaac Palmer placed fifth, Travis Wollenberg took seventh and Austin Marcks took ninth.
“The boys ran pretty much how they’ve been running all season,” Bonduel coach James Watry said. “They’ve worked really hard. Last year when we made it to state, they were all a part of it and their goal is to make it back.”
The coach was also impressed with his fifth runner, Bryce Robaidek, who finished 16th.
“Bryce really stepped up today for our No. 5 runner,” Watry said. “And that is what has been making a difference for us all year.”
The Bears edged Wittenberg-Birnamwood for the conference crown. The Chargers were led by Riley Bohlman, who finished eighth with a time of 19:01.
“They knew Bonduel would be tough,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Cathy Easker said. “They knew they all had to run well and stay as close to them as they could. I thought they did very well.”
Menominee Indian’s Brandon Reiter finished sixth in 18:24 to pace the sixth-place Eagles.
In the girls meet, Bonduel took second place, getting edged out by Iola-Scandinavia for the top spot. Wittenberg-Birnamwood finished sixth and Marion was seventh.
“I graduated four of the top five girls last year,” Watry said. “Originally, we thought this was going to be a major rebuilding year. We actually thought we had a shot at winning today. Our prediction ended up being right, but Iola-Scandinavia ran just a little bit better.”
Mallory Mews led the Bonduel girls, finishing third with a time of 16:53. Wittenberg-Birnamwood was led by Alexis Balliett, who finished in fifth place.
Marion’s Delaney Greene-Gretzinger finished 10th. Amherst’s Alyssa Niggemann took first with a time of 16:41.
