Courtney Baumann earned a trip to the WIAA sectional Wednesday, finishing 17th with a round of 99 at the Division 1 regional at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour.
Baumann, a Shawano senior, was the fourth and final individual qualifier, edging out teammate Megan Beck, who finished with a round of 100.
Baumann came in at 51 on the first nine holes, but put together a score of 48 on the next nine.
“I think Courtney could feel it slipping away on the front,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “She really got it going on the back nine and played a little smarter. And she did what it took.”
Beck also picked it up on the back nine after shooting a 55. Beck finished with a 45, almost enough to catch Baumann.
“To lose to your teammate, I think it’s a little bit better than losing to another school,” Kugler said.
Caitlin Ryczkowski of Pulaski, Becca Simpson of Seymour and Marissa Ellner of Pulaski were the other individual qualifiers to move on to the Division 1 sectional Tuesday at Thornberry Creek at Oneida in Hobart.
Also qualifying at the event were the teams from Notre Dame, which won with a score of 335, Bay Port (370), Green Bay Preble (375) and Green Bay Southwest/Green Bay West (380).
“We knew that the four teams were going to be hard to beat,” Kugler said. “We kind of knew going in that we had to beat the teams individually and get individual spots.”
Shawano (424) came in seventh.
The task for Baumann only gets harder from here, as the level of competition increases at at the sectional level.
“She knows she’s got her hands full going into this sectional, but you never know,” Kugler said. “Anything can happen.”
Rounding out Shawano’s scores were Julia Beck, who shot a 104, Cheyenne Knueppel 121 and Emily Smith 123.
“Cheyenne showed great improvement,” Kugler said. “Emily Smith improved, she improved at least 10 strokes over the year. … I think she’ll get better. Cheyenne will clearly get better. And Julia, look what she did today. She shot a 48 on the front.”
Knueppel, a freshman, and sophomores Julia Beck and Smith will represent the core of the team next year.
“Those three are what we have to build on and what we have for the future,” Kugler said. “We’ll have to find a couple more girls next year.”
Green Bay Preble’s Maddy Neumeier was the regional medalist, shooting a round of 75.
Bonduel
Bonduel finished with a team score of 427, finishing eighth at the nine-team Division 2 regional at Mid Vallee Golf Course in Lawrence.
The Bears were led by junior Elizabeth Schaal, who shot a 104. Samantha Schaal and Danielle Lautenbach each came in at 106, while Taylor Diemel shot a 111.
All four golfers missed the individual cut to advance to the sectional tournament.
Fox Valley Lutheran’s Kayla Priebe was the medalist, shooting 71 on the day.
Marinette won the event with a score of 339, followed by sectional team qualifiers Fox Valley Lutheran (340), Appleton Xavier (355) and Freedom (368).
