Antigo, Lakeland hockey teams tie

Jan. 9 Antigo 5, Lakeland 5 An overtime period couldn’t break the tie between Antigo and Lakeland as the two teams called it a day after a 5-5 game in Minocqua. It was an even first period and a half before each team went on a roll, each apparently heading toward victory. Tied at 2-2 after the first period, Antigo’s Eli Kassler scored with an assist from Owen Dickman at 7:48 in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. The Red Robins scored twice more in the third period, first on a goal by Dickman and assist by Kassler at 3:37 and then on an unassisted goal by Ethan Novy at 9:25. Leading 5-2 with less than half of the period remaining, things were looking up for Antigo. But then, the Thunderbirds stormed back with goals at 11:03, 13:01 and 16:37 to tie the game at 5-5 and force an overtime period. Lakeland tired to score with 10 shots on goal in the overtime period, and Antigo took four shots, but none of them found the net. All total, Lakeland had 51 shots on goal, as Richie Veriha notched 46 saves. Antigo had 30 shots on goal, with Cam Bernard getting 25 saves. The Thunderbirds were penalized three times for six minutes, and Antigo was called for five infractions for 10 minutes. Both teams are 2-1-1 in the Great Northern Conference and 5-4 overall.
