The railroad crossing north of Mercier’s Fastop is scheduled to be passable again on Friday or Monday, according to information presented at the state Highway 22 informational meeting last week.
The crossing was closed June 29 to allow for street reconstruction and railroad track replacement.
Duke Peters, project manager for Peters Concrete Company, said the weather will dictate how quickly the work can be finished.
“At least you’ll have access across. I don’t want to say open,” he said.
Reconstruction of Highway 22 from West Highland Drive to East Highland Drive began in April; the project is scheduled to end in early November.
During the next two weeks, crews will fill in gaps on Highway 22 and work on sidewalks, crosswalks and intersections.
“Intersections from here on out should go pretty fast,” Peters said.
In some stretches, the sidewalks will be open on only one side of the street.
“It will be flip-flopped literally almost daily, where you can walk and can’t walk,” Peters said.
In addition, traffic will be reduced to one lane in some areas; the route will be marked by barrels.
Soil work is scheduled to begin with the placement of topsoil at the sides of the highway. Seeding and fertilizing will be done later.
Also, construction will take place for the parking lane near the baseball field at Memorial Field.
